“The elders say there is no one universal system of teaching Whare Waananga. Each Iwi has its own Tohunga, its own college, and its own methods. Their word is thus: “hold steadfastly to our teaching, leave out of consideration that of other tribes. Let their descendants adhere to their teaching and you to ours, so that if you be in error, it is we your relatives who declare it unto you and you are not responsible; and if you are in the right it is we who shall leave to you this valuable property and should have credit thereof.”

  1. Tuwhirirangi is the name of the Whare through which entry is gained into Te Toi Oo Ngaa Rangi. Underneath it is the mouth called Te Pu Motomoto Oo Tikitiki Oo Rangi; that is the door of entry into Tuwhirirangi, within which are the guardians of Te Pu Motomoto.  Continue reading →

At the time the Waananga was brought down to Whare Kura by Taane, by Ruatau, Pawa and the Whatukura of Te Toi Oo Ngaa Rangi, the Pou Tiri Ao were appointed by them to all places; to the sun, to the moon, to the stars, to the clouds, to the winds, to the oceans, to Hades. The Pou Tiri Ao of the heavens and the planes of these heavens are eleven in number.
